Well…… where to start?
Day one of this course, I found myself sitting in a colossal lecture hall, utterly terrified at what lye ahead. However, as I sit here, in week six, writing my reflection post, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and achievement. The blogging system of learning has proven to be spectacular, broadening my education through its communal environment. Not only was I able to share my ideas and views across the internet, I was also able to access blogs of other BCM110 students and leave comments, leading to the exchange of information and feedback.
The lecture and tutorial conducted during week 2, was definitely a game changer in how I perceived messages conveyed through the media. Being educated on the Transmission model of “Sender” and “Receiver”, gave me a greater perception of communicating with the media and as a result, I now (habitually) analyze advertisements of all sorts with a critical eye. Week three and four were both critical in understanding the core concepts of the media, such as its mechanics (semiotics) and the decreasing diversity of its ownership ( as a result I’m now reading into the present events and dealing regarding Rupert Murdoch and Gina Rinehart).
The first six weeks have been an incredible learning experience, not only through its learning material, but the actual model of the subject. I have learnt how to network, to share information and receive it, even if there is the odd criticism .
The media is no longer flashy camera’s, columned articles and reality TV shows. I now view it as an integral part of modern society, an ecosystem that thrives off communication between professionals and the average citizen.
It’s safe to say that there is A LOT of learning to be had. However these first six weeks of BCM110 have opened up the world of the media, presenting it in a light never seen before. My knowledge of the media has definitely strengthened my grip on the concept and I feel it can only get stronger in the weeks to come.
Cheers 🙂
